Brew your own beer save money homebrewing!

Homebrewing is having a bit resurgence in recent years. It’s not just the recession, though that’s a factor, brewing your own beer or wine has become fashionable thanks to various celebrities on TV doing home brewing (Neil Morrissey and the two guys travelling about the UK whose name’s I have forgotten – good programme though!) and a certain element of “it’s so out it’s in” because home brewing became a really naff thing to do by the 1980’s but as with all things, has finally become en vogue again. In reality it’s a fascinating hobby which, happily, also involves a fair bit of drinking. Home brewing was massive in the 1970’s when every Boots, Woolworths and supermarket had a home brew section selling kits and equipment. These days it’s a bit trickier to source the gear unless you’re lucky enough to have a local home brew shop but there are some great online homebrew beer and wine stores and we thought we’ve tell you about a very good one!

If you’ve ever fancied the idea of 23 litres of lager, bitter, stout (and many beers in between) bubbling away in the corner of the kitchen/spare room then check out Brew it Yourself and start home brewing next week. It’s very easy to do (I actually do it myself, really!) – you start off with basic equipment and choose a type of beer that you want to make and you can add to your kit over time if you get into it (and you will) until you’re producing very professional results which will amaze and delight your beer loving friends and family. There is something very cool about producing a crate of home made beer at a gathering or social get together that you’ve actually made yourself, and even better when your guests, expecting something hideous and undrinkable, start to express their amazement at your almost alchemical mastery of turning water into golden ale….. You can brew wheat beers and all sorts of specialised lagers and bitters. It’s not just flat bitter or sour lager any more.

Beer kits today are much better than the ones your grandad used in the 1970’s and produce consistently good results. Obviously, once you’ve laid out for your basic equipment, you’re just paying for the kits and whatever sugar you use (you can use granulated normal sugar, or brewing sugar, or spray malt – with other alternatives for the more adventurous) for future brews so over time it works out to be very economical plus you know what you’re putting into your beer. Once fermented, it’s easy to either bottle or keg your brew in a pressure barrel. Generally speaking, lagers need to be bottled because they need very high pressure to carbonate properly (and you’ll want to be able to chill them), but bitters and stouts can be kegged which means that once they’re in the keg and properly fermented and conditioned (all beer kits come with instructions so don’t let me baffle you with beer jargon, conditioned just means it’s been left until it’s ready – normally a couple of weeks after being transferred to either bottles or the pressure barrel/keg), you’re away. If you’re still worried that it’s difficult then take a look at this handy instructional video clip!
